Alcohol in Maryland

A brief guide to alcohol laws & licensing in Maryland

Do I need a license?

Do I need a license to sell alcohol?

Do I need a license to serve alcohol at my event?

Is my bar or restaurant in compliance with county and state laws/regulations?

Do the laws and regulations separate beer, wine and spirits?

These are some of the questions we get from citizens who purchase, sell, and/or distribute alcoholic beverages in the state of Maryland. These are also some of the questions you should ask yourself if you plan on selling or distributing alcoholic beverages to others.

Alcoholic beverage laws in Maryland are controlled by both state law and county regulations. Therefore the county in which you plan to sell or distribute the alcohol will play a big role in determining the course of action you need to take.

Each county’s Liquor Board (or other office handling liquor licensing and regulations affairs) is happy to answer your questions concerning what you need to do in order to stay compliant with liquor laws.
